Pine West Catering by Tarnow, Inc., was established in 1957 by Carl and Lillyan Tarnow.  The business was originally located on Connant Avenue off of Douglas Avenue.  In 1982, Pine West Catering by Tarnow, Inc., moved to its present location at 2425 South 11th Street in Kalamazoo.  Pine West was introduced as the area's premier location for business and social events.  Later, the business further expanded, nearly doubling its original capacity.

The Tarnow family originally started business in the Kalamazoo area in 1910, when Adolph A. Tarnow started “Tarnow Dairy.”  In 1935 he moved from the farm into town, and delivered milk from a horse drawn wagon.  The dairy soon grew into the area’s largest home delivery service.  It expanded its product line to include twenty-eight items delivered right to your door! 

Adolph passed the business over to his son, Carl Sr., who ran it until his son, Carl Jr., took it over. Tarnow’s has always been a family operated business, and we are very proud of this!  We are now into our fifth generation of family working in the business. 

In 1951, Carl started “Tarnow’s Restaurant,” located in front of the dairy.  He built the walls of the dairy bar himself.  The restaurant became so popular Carl had to enlarge it. People were lined up a block down the street waiting to get in for lunch.  At first, Carl’s Mom helped with the cooking.  Maxine was known for her “good home cooking!”  From the beginnings of the small restaurant, Carl expanded into catering.  At first, it was small parties that consisted mainly of sandwiches, salads, cake and ice cream…and Carl’s famous punch!  It grew into larger events as he expanded his staff in the early seventies.  Today, Carl and his daughter Brenda continue to cook “just like Mom used to.”  Tarnow’s has always been known for its good food, and plenty of it!
